Let me start out by saying that I “one-clicked” this due to the cover. Plus a deep love of Regency romances and being always willing to discover new authors. This was a free book at Amazon.Gabriel Farrington, the new Duke of Calgarth, has promised his father on the older man’s deathbed that he, and his brothers, would continue the feud the family has with Cornelius Cunningham, the Duke of Horndean. He decides that the way to get back at the Cunningham family is to wreck the engagement of Horndean’s son, Richard, to Lady Evelyn Godfrey.
A novella, very rushed in some parts, excruciatingly slow in others. Novellas and short stories are difficult for many writers. Few of them can pull off well-developed characters and tight storytelling in such a restrained format. Barton doesn’t succeed. This story smacks of serial writing, with more of the story in the future installments. Frankly, I abhor that type of cheating. Especially when the reader isn’t warned at the start.
For me, it is important to be able to root for both the hero and the heroine. If either one is unlikeable, I expect a backstory, a reason, for that nastiness or selfishness. Don’t tell me how mama raised a caring son, only to show me a jack***. In addition, show me growth, show me why any woman would want him other than title or money. There was nothing in Gabriel that should attract Evelyn.
In addition, the author needs to do some basic research. In this age of the internet, there is no longer an excuse for failing to do so. If an American like me can catch such blatant errors as how to address a Duke, then I can only imagine how those who are more knowledgeable must feel about it.
There is so much filler with descriptions of EVERYTHING ad nauseam! Less is more. The writing was stilted in many parts, too much “tell” and not enough “show”.
Curious because I saw so many 5 star ratings when I went back to the Amazon site through my Kindle, I read all of them. Aside from the number of male names, it seemed like many might not have read the book. Quite a few were obviously non-English speakers based on some poor grammar. And I even recognized some standard scripting found with paid reviews. While I’m sure that many of the reviewers, good and bad, did give their honest opinion, I find it difficult to believe all of them are legit.
This won’t be an author for me to read again, unless I see her published by a major publishing house that will be able to edit and direct her writing. There is some potential here, but Barton just isn’t ready for prime time yet. 2 out of 5.

This had the makings of a really good Regency romance. However, the author didn't take the time to develop characters (almost all were completely one dimensional) and she rushed the story to a very choppy, unbelievable end. Most of the time my complaint is that a story could have been told in fewer pages, but not with this book. It needed at least 100 more pages to make it an actual novel, in my opinion.
Truly pathetic attempt by a wannabe-writer who simply cannot write well. For someone who claims background as a newspaper writer, she could have only worked for her local Pennysaver. I've never known a local weekly to accept text by someone who writes themselves into grammatical corners & is incapable of extricating themselves. Or starting over! Characters are poorly drawn, poorly motivated. She seems to think a decades-old inter-family contretemps, dormant since beyond ill feelings of a prior generation, and in no way involving current characters, constitutes a "feud." This is hardly a foundation which will support the scaffolding of her kinda-plot. Another violation of the most rudimentary journalistic integrity - and especially the violation of novelistic realism - is her total lack of appropriate research. The game of bridge was not invented until 1886, over 6 decades after the "time" of her supposed storyline. The writing style & quality is unacceptable for any reader over the age of 12, yet the purely egregious sex scene late in the book makes this volume R-rated for minor children. And an idiotic, ill-motivated, anachronistic device purely for titillation. Such would not happen among the upper classes of the Regency Era. But since this author knows nothing about Regency England or upper class life in any era, what else can you expect but more idiocy from a dumkopf wannabe-writer? Given the number of pathetic offerings, never-gonna-be writer, either. Give it up, Bridget Barton, and go play bridge.
This is like an outline of a story that was never developed. This was one-third of a story. There was no relationship to speak of except for the ones between Gabriel and his brother, Hugh and Gabriel and his best friend, Stuart.
Just when I was settling into the story it ended. There was a quickie sex scene at the end that didn’t even make sense. Buy book two, absolutely not. There are way better books with a part 2 that I didn’t give into and buy, even though curiosity was intense. I can’t even begin to describe how badly the author shortchanged, what could have been a good book. The cover is nice and I can picture her, possibly, as the woman in the picture. See I look at the whole thing. I want to either see or feel the title in the story. I want to see the cover in the story.
Give me romance or give me nothing.
There are just too many places where the author could have developed this book. What happened to Evelyn’s parents after Evelyn pulled out of the marriage they arraigned for her, to fill their coffers? How was her relationship with her parents after that? Did the Cunninghams go after Evelyn’s parents? How did Richard take the break up of his engagement? There was no romance between Gabriel and Evelyn. Even after they were quickly married, the author could have give some lines to their relationship. While the cover was nice, I didn’t get the title or the story. Maybe I had a condensed free version. I don't know.
This story is not one I would not want to read again on a rainy night in Georgia while curled up in my warm lazy boy chair with a glass wine in front of my fireplace.
