Avengers / Invaders Alex Ross Jim Krueger Steve Sadowski Books
When I ordered this book I expected just another "meet, fight each other, defeat the real enemy" story. Instead, Avengers/Invaders is a tale that examines the history of the Invaders while also pulling in the current events of the Marvel universe at the time it was written (Steve Rogers is dead and Bucky is Captain America; unlike the current Marvel continuity where now Steve Rogers is alive and Captain America again while Bucky is dead). It was a much deeper story than I expected, and because of that it was better than I thought it would be.Product details

Avengers / Invaders Alex Ross Jim Krueger Steve Sadowski Books Reviews
There really is a lot here to like beautiful artwork, a decent story, and a lot of background into the characters (which was helpful to me since I'm not versed in the Marvel universe).
The writer did a good job of depicting 1940s personalities and how they would react in modern day. Conversely, the way the modern heroes react to the 1940s characters is also well done - it's easy to see why the old superheroes were underestimated and they could capitalize on that.
As well, there is a story in there of a common soldier who also came back with the superheroes and how he discovers his own future. It's well done without being melodramatic.
A really nice touch is that characters who aged and learned had a maturity that made sense and didn't make the younger less seasoned self look stupid. This was especially apparant with Namor meeting his future self and the terrible future of the Atlantean kingdom. It just made sense and all felt right.
In all, I can't comment on continuity or whether these characters lived up to previous works. What I can say is that I greatly enjoyed this graphic novel and appreciated the strong writing and artwork. As well, there is a lot of story in the book to digest - it isn't an overly quick read and then discard.
What happens when the Invaders (Captain America, Bucky, Human Torch, Toro and Submariner) enter a rift in time to meet today's Avengers? How will they return to their past without destroying the present? What will happen when the 1940s Captain America meets Winter Soldier /Captain America? Namor meets himself as the Submariner? Avengers / Invaders presents this compelling scenario, set after the Civil War and Captain America's death.
This is actually quite an epic feast. I usually have niggling doubts about past Marvel characters making their way into the present, but Avengers / Invaders presents Marvel's top characters equally in top form. And why not? Captain America and Namor have long been Marvel stalwarts. And the Invaders as we see, were yesterday's Avengers.
Fortunately, the Invaders don't end up as hokey representations of the past (the 70s series was good but this takes them to a whole different level) and the focus of the story is really about them and the moral choices they have to confront. They do not end up as quaint relics from a bygone era.
The storytelling is excellent mainly because the writers (including Alex Ross) focus on the human core of our heroes. For example, Bucky meets himself as the ex-Winter Soldier / Captain America - triggering a mindbender. How do you deal with your own existence and issues of life and death - when larger problems are at stake?
There are little technical umms however. Stephen Sadowski's pencils are right on (as seen in the included sketches), but something gets lost in the inks and colours. Still, the story doesn't suffer.
Worth the price of admission for Alex Ross's sketchbook - he is truly the most epic superhero artist ever. Every tableaux looks like heroes about to enter Valhalla, Asgard, etc. His hyperrealistic work burns to the soul. The man's covers and variants - which I don't usually gush about - are something to behold...
I love The Invaders, and I really enjoyed this series. We get the opportunity to see how the Invaders fare in the present day, and how some of the Avengers fare back in the throes of World War II. The artwork is fantastic and it's overall a pretty fun ride. I'd definitely recommend it to any Invaders fan.
