Interesting mix of of Hong Kong history and fictional, long winded soap opera. When the author describes the shifting politics, palace intrigues, pirate raids and revolutionaries, it's a good read. When the author spends ten pages covering every detail of another marital spat between Mary and Charles Sekloong, I want to hit the fast-forward button...but I can't. It's a book.Product details

I read the story myself, and it is a grand epic on how Hong Kong became the prosperous port city that it is today, as well as the growth of the People's Republic of China as a major world power. Mary Osgood Seeklong's family gets involved on both sides of the conflict as the years roll by. We see her coming to Hong Kong as a 20 year old girl and we see her celebrating her 90th. birthday(which the story is wrapped around). She sees Hong Kong transform into a financial and cultural crossroads that is the envy of the world. However, as China's assumed responsibility for it, it is on a downward spiral while areas on the Mainland are prospering; however, health and safety concerns are causing the economy to heard towards collapse. That's why many people from Hong Kong(and the Mainland) have emigrated here to North America where they have made prosperous and stable lives. I find this book a true history lesson into the paths of how East and West have met.
Came in good condition. Books is as good as ever.
My favorite book
I learned a lot about the Oriental ways and will continue to see!k more information on that subject. The author did a fine work in my opinion.
I read all three in the saga and loved them all,
While this is a good book, the author spends 40-50 pages on a single night then follows up "10 years went by and Mary had 4 children" (paraphrasing). The author is writing nicely, but would enjoy more equal attention to more of the time covered.
This book has so many interesting characters and plots. I learned a lot about weapons I never knew.
